Trollers ruled at Irvine Lake this week, reported Jimmy Getty at the Pro Shop. "The trolling bite was just wide open this week", observed Getty. "Boaters also did pretty well with bait, but shorecasting success was very location-specific. Most of the trout were quality-grade rainbows in the 2 to 6-pound range and a few lunkers this week, but only a handful of the exotics." Trolling lures that produced big numbers of fish included Rapala Countdown CD03 and CD07 in firetiger, or Rapala X-Rap XR04 and XR06 in hot pink or clown colors. Top trolling spots were mid-lake and Santiago Flats. Bait dunkers scored best with garlic Power Bait in various colors, along with Power Mouse, and nightcrawler combinations on a 14 to 16-inch leader. Woody's Cove, Trout Island, and Boat Dock Cove were best for bait. The few bass anglers who ventured out did best by metering balls of bait at 25 to 40 feet, and dropping down vertical presentations. Moderate numbers of 2 to 3 pound largemouth were mixed with marauding trout that were chasing bait, and most bass anglers actually caught more trout than bass.
Families with children age 12 and under found good to very good numbers of 1 to 3-pound trout in the Kids Lagoon. A few larger-grade trout to 5 pounds were also planted in the Lagoon this week, and the usual Power Bait, worms, and mini jigs were all producing fish. The main lake had very good water clarity, with the lake level holding steady, and a surface temperature of 57 degrees. All roads remain open. Irvine Lake is proud to announce that all worm containers sold in the tackle shop, and all utensils, plates, and "to go" packaging used in the snack bar are now made from the EarthSmart biodegradable materials. 2) John gilbert of Orange, 8-4 rainbow trout on a Rapala at the west shore.

Irvine Lake Fishing Report
Irvine LakeThe opening of trout season was a tremendous success at Irvine Lake this past weekend, reported Jimmy Getty at the Pro Shop. "It was the best opening day we have had in many years. We checked in hundreds of limits over the 3-day weekend. Just about all of the trout were quality-size 2 to 7-pounders, with lots of browns and steelhead mixed in, and a few of the bigger rainbows too." Although the "easy limit" action found on Friday backed off...... Read More
Sacramento River Fishing Report
Sacramento RiverSalmon anglers on the Sacramento River found that most of their quarry had moved upriver with the recent storm. Most of those fish have now passed through, and the river above Red Bluff will close after Oct. 31. The stretch of river from the Highway 113 Bridge upstream to the Sycamore Boat Ramp will remain open until Dec. 9. There will be an opportunity to catch a few salmon in that area until the season ends if you...... Read More
